Clean slate

Meaning

Start over without being judged for past mistakes.

Usage

Used when someone seeks a fresh start in relationships or work.

Origin & History

Origins and dates here are approximate summaries. Many idioms have disputed or unknown origins, and not every date has been checked against a historical dictionary, so treat specific dates and stories as a starting point rather than a citation.

Metaphor from wiping a chalkboard or slate clean.

Used in classrooms and military settings before entering common parlance.
